Lethbridge Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Lethbridge politics
This Week In Lethbridge:
- There are meetings at City Hall this week - and we’ll be keeping a close eye on them to let you know what takes place! Unfortunately, several City of Lethbridge online services were unavailable over the weekend due to system upgrades - including the agendas. They should be back online this morning, and you can view the schedule here.
- Rental prices in Lethbridge are increasing faster than the provincial average, with one-bedroom units rising by 14.5% to $1,366 per month over the past year and two-bedroom units going up 8.6% to $1,529. The provincial average for a one-bedroom unit is $1,534, and $1,876 for a two-bedroom unit. Lethbridge ranked 32nd in Canada for rental costs.
- Winter pruning of street trees is now underway, as it is the optimal time for tree maintenance when they are dormant. The pruning efforts focus on Red Crow Boulevard West, Columbia Bay Park, Corvette Crescent South, and parts of downtown. Motorists are advised to watch for pruning crews in these areas over the coming months.
Last Week In Lethbridge:
- Lethbridge MP Rachael Thomas and other Conservative MPs are calling for a federal election sooner rather than later, following Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's announcement that he would be stepping down as Liberal leader. Thomas criticized the Liberal government's policies over the past nine years, claiming they worsened housing costs, taxes, crime, and poverty. “Liberal MPs are dumping Trudeau, not because they’ve had a change of heart, but because he is no longer popular enough to win an election and keep them in power,” she said.
- Rent isn’t the only thing increasing in Lethbridge - property values also rose. Lethbridge's property market saw increased home values due to higher demand and limited supply. Last year, Lethbridge's housing market saw a 7% increase in sales and an 8% rise in average home prices, with the average home price reaching $390,000.
- The Lethbridge Hurricanes have launched the SRI Yager-Bombs campaign to raise funds for the Alzheimer Society of Alberta and Northwest Territories. SRI Homes will donate $250 for each goal and $100 for each assist recorded by Brayden Yager this season, with donations starting retroactively from when Yager joined the team in December. Yager, whose grandfather recently passed away from Alzheimer’s, is passionate about supporting the cause. The campaign has already raised $1,100, with Yager having scored two goals and six assists so far.
