Lethbridge Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Lethbridge politics
This Week In Lethbridge:
- It’s Christmas on Wednesday. Thank you to every single one of our readers and supporters who reached out, donated, volunteered, or shared our content this year. We appreciate every single one of you and hope you have a wonderful holiday season filled with friends and family. Merry Christmas!
- We don’t often use these weekly emails to explicitly ask for support, but we’re in the middle of our year-end fundraiser, and we’ve set a goal to raise $10,000 by December 31st. This is a critical time for non-profits, and reaching our goal will ensure we can continue the important work we do. If you value what we bring to the table and want to see us keep going, please consider making a donation today. Every bit helps, and we’re deeply grateful for your support. You can contribute by clicking here. Thank you!
- There are no Council or Committee meetings this week. Regularly scheduled meetings will resume in January.
Last Week In Lethbridge:
- Southern Alberta's first purpose-built indoor pickleball facility, called Pickle Point, has opened in Lethbridge. Located in a 20,000-square-foot space with eight permanent courts, the facility caters to both members and drop-ins, offering year-round access. The growing popularity of pickleball, now played by nearly 1.4 million Canadians, prompted the need for this specialized facility. Pickle Point aims to serve not only Lethbridge but also surrounding communities, offering clinics and round-robin events.
- The NDP held on to the riding of Lethbridge-West as Rob Miyashiro secured victory over UCP candidate John Middleton-Hope by 1,150 votes in the by-election. Miyashiro expressed his gratitude to all voters, promising to represent the entire community while continuing the legacy of outgoing MLA Shannon Phillips. NDP leader Naheed Nenshi celebrated the win and suggested that a strong campaign and optimistic vision had resonated with voters.
- The Lethbridge Police Service (LPS) said it will implement photo radar in 42 playground zones starting January 13th, 2025 and operating daily from 7:30 am to 9:00 pm. This comes after Alberta revised regulations limiting automated traffic enforcement to school, playground, and construction zones by April 1st, 2025. The Province also lifted a ban on new photo radar sites, enabling LPS to add the new locations after removing 27 sites in non-compliant locations.
