Lethbridge Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Lethbridge politics

📅 This Week In Lethbridge: 📅

  • We're hosting a Pints & Politics event in Lethbridge, in conjunction with our friends at the Alberta Institute! Councillor Al Beeber will be joining us, and Alberta Institute Project Director Lindsay Wilson will be hosting a Q&A, followed by plenty of time for informal conversation. The event takes place on Wednesday, May 20th. It’s free, but you’ll need to RSVP here.

  • Council will hold a special meeting on Tuesday at 1:30 pm  to address the impending expiration of the City’s current Emergency Medical Services (EMS) agreement. The Community Issues Committee has recommended that Council formally notify Alberta Emergency Health Services (EHS) that it will not pre-approve any additional costs under a new EMS ground ambulance agreement and will not commit to extending the current contract beyond its September 30, 2026 expiry. The decision passed narrowly in a 5-4 vote and comes as EHS moves toward a new funding model based on provincial benchmark costs, which are lower than what Lethbridge currently spends to deliver integrated Fire-EMS services. The City’s EMS system currently costs about $20.8 million annually, including a $3.5-million municipal subsidy, and officials warn that future costs could rise depending on negotiations, inflation, and the new funding framework. Council is effectively being asked to choose between accepting provincial benchmark funding - while covering any shortfall locally - or declining and allowing the Province to pursue alternative service delivery models, including procurement or direct provincial provision. Administration notes that both options carry significant financial and operational risks, particularly for the City’s integrated Fire-EMS model.

  • The Community Issues Committee meeting, originally scheduled for Tuesday, has been cancelled.

  • City Council has unanimously adopted its 2026-2029 Strategic Plan, setting the City’s priorities for the current term and outlining a broad framework for economic, social, and environmental development. The plan focuses on six main goals, including economic prosperity, a healthy and diverse community, cultural vibrancy, thoughtful urban design, environmental responsibility, and strengthened partnerships. A key emphasis is placed on supporting existing local businesses while also attracting new investment and strengthening Lethbridge’s role as a regional hub for industries such as agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, and emerging sectors. City leadership noted that the plan is intended to be flexible and responsive, allowing priorities to shift as community needs and challenges evolve over time. It also reinforces commitments to safety, livability, and community wellbeing, while supporting arts, recreation, and tourism. Council members described the strategy as a guiding but adaptable document aimed at positioning Lethbridge as a welcoming and competitive place to live and do business.

  • The University of Lethbridge is moving forward with a $13.5-million air-supported multi-sport dome, set to be built north of the Community Sports Stadium with construction expected to begin in 2027 and finish by August of that year. The project is being significantly supported by a $1.15-million contribution from the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union, which leaders describe as an uncommon level of student investment in campus infrastructure. The 127,680-square-foot facility is intended to address a shortage of indoor training and recreation space in southern Alberta, where there are currently no comparable domes south of Calgary. It will include a full-size turf field, indoor courts, and a sprint track, enabling year-round use for varsity teams, students, and community groups. University officials say existing facilities are over capacity, and the dome will help meet growing demand while supporting both athletic programming and broader community use. The City of Lethbridge has also contributed $200,000, and officials expect the facility to eventually generate revenue to help offset its costs.
