On Tuesday, at 12:30 pm, there will be a City Council meeting. As part of the meeting, there will be a Public Hearing. The hearing is to gather feedback on a proposed amendment to a land-use bylaw that would rezone a portion of land at 2425 30 Street West from Mixed Density Residential (R-M) to Medium Density Residential (R-75) to allow for apartment-style housing. The change is intended to support continued residential development in the Copperwood Stage 2 area. City Administration says they found no issues related to transportation, infrastructure, or servicing, and noted the amendment would enable a greater range of housing types and higher density, up to 75 units per hectare.

The Community Issues Committee will meet on Thursday at 1:30 pm. The Chinook Arch Regional Library System is asking Lethbridge City Council to support a proposed increase in its per-capita levy to $8.17 for 2027 in order to maintain library services across its 40-member municipal partnership. The system, which has operated for 34 years, coordinates shared services such as cataloguing, IT support, resource sharing, training, and digital collections, helping reduce duplication and improve efficiency across regional libraries. It emphasizes that public libraries generate strong economic returns, estimating about $6 in benefit for every $1 invested, and notes that Lethbridge is its largest member library, accounting for a significant share of borrowing and system usage. The presentation warns that past funding restraint has already led to staffing reductions and that without increased support, users could see longer wait times, reduced collections, and fewer online resources.
-
Council will receive a presentation from the Lethbridge Senior Citizens Organization (LSCO), requesting that City Council approve a temporary rent pause from April 1st to December 31st, 2026 for its facility at 500 11th Street South, valued at about $150,225. The organization says it is facing serious financial strain after eight consecutive years of operating deficits, shrinking reserves, rising costs, and reduced grant and gaming revenues. LSCO argues that a short-term rent pause would allow it to redirect fundraising and operating revenue toward rebuilding its reserves while continuing to deliver senior-focused programs and services. It highlights recent improvements such as increased donations, higher centre usage, and expanded programming, while noting ongoing post-pandemic recovery challenges and inflation pressures.

The City of Lethbridge is preparing a “stub year” 2027 Operating Budget as part of its multi-year budgeting framework, following a recent change that staggers operating and capital budget cycles. The current 2023-2026 Operating Budget must be extended into 2027, and Council will deliberate the 2027 budget in June 2026 before final approval later that summer. An update to Council highlights that the City is facing significant budget pressures from service demands, inflation, external government decisions, and funding commitments to community programs. These pressures are expected to put upward pressure on property taxes unless spending can be reduced.
- Police are reporting that more than 30 encampments were dismantled downtown over the course of a month as part of an intensified enforcement effort in response to rising complaints and calls for service. The Lethbridge Police Service increased both overt and covert patrols in key areas, particularly around 2nd Avenue A North, an area which has seen ongoing public safety concerns. During the enforcement action, officers addressed about 120 individuals for open drug use, issued dozens of outstanding warrants, and laid multiple Criminal Code charges. Police also arrested suspected drug traffickers, including individuals linked to fentanyl distribution, and seized significant quantities of illicit substances along with cash and stolen goods.
