Tourism Lethbridge’s 2025 report shows generally positive trends in the city’s visitor economy, with total trips to Lethbridge rising 9.5% even as overall visitor spending remained mostly stable, dipping slightly by 0.7% from 2024. Hotel occupancy fell modestly to 58.1%, though average daily room rates increased to $131.59, suggesting steady pricing strength despite lower occupancy. The city also saw strong event-driven economic activity, generating about $14 million and attracting nearly 588,000 attendees, including more than 83,000 visitors from outside the region. International visitation grew by 9.4%, while US visitors declined by 5.7%. Tourism Lethbridge also reported increased digital and media reach, with website traffic up and hundreds of millions of media impressions. The organization says it is focusing on long-term growth through its four strategic pillars aimed at improving hospitality, partnerships, storytelling, and operational impact.

A new City of Lethbridge report warns that major upgrades are urgently needed at the city’s wastewater treatment plant to ensure it can continue operating safely and support future growth. The asset management plan found several critical components, including UV disinfection systems, sludge processing equipment, and electrical infrastructure, are in very poor condition and approaching the end of their service life. It also highlights a serious operational risk, noting there are no backup systems in place if key equipment fails. The plant is currently being pushed beyond its engineered capacity, with average flows exceeding 100 per cent, which is limiting development and economic expansion. City officials estimate that upgrades and expansion could cost between $250 million and $350 million, likely requiring higher water rates to fund the work. A phased plan has been proposed, starting with capacity expansion, followed by system replacements and longer-term growth planning, with Council set to begin discussions in 2027 budget deliberations.
- In his April 2026 Mayor’s Column, Mayor Blaine Hyggen reflected on several recent City Council discussions and community developments, including updates on emergency services, strategic planning, and civic investments. He noted that Council had been reviewing proposed changes from Emergency Health Services that could impact Lethbridge’s long-standing integrated Fire and EMS model, while emphasizing continued support for the current system and the need to carefully assess the financial and service implications as more information became available. Hyggen also outlined Council’s Strategic Plan, which was presented as a framework to guide economic growth, infrastructure alignment, and community development while supporting business investment and regional competitiveness. The column also highlighted Council’s support for major upcoming events, including an international Tae Kwon-Do tournament and a large baseball festival, both expected to bring economic and social benefits to the city.
