Lethbridge Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Lethbridge politics

📅 This Week In Lethbridge: 📅

  • We're hosting a Pints & Politics event in Lethbridge, in conjunction with our friends at the Alberta Institute! Councillor Al Beeber will be joining us, and Alberta Institute Project Director Lindsay Wilson will be hosting a Q&A, followed by plenty of time for informal conversation. The event takes place on Wednesday, May 20th. It’s free, but you’ll need to RSVP here.

  • On Tuesday, at 10:00 am, there will be a Special City Council Meeting. The purpose of the meeting is for Council to receive a presentation about procurement practices. Council will also hear about what can go wrong in public procurement and the legal and governance risks that arise when established rules are not followed. It identifies five key problem areas: political interference, conflicts of interest, sole sourcing, biased bidding practices, and unsolicited proposals.

  • At 12:30 pm, also on Tuesday, there will be a regular meeting of City Council. On the agenda is a proposed amendment to the City of Lethbridge’s Lot Grading Bylaw. It would shift oversight and enforcement from the Planning and Design department to Capital Planning and Engineering, with the goal of aligning responsibilities with subject-matter experts in water drainage. The changes are largely administrative, including updated wording to reflect the new department and an increase in the lot grading permit fee from $100 to $125 to support cost recovery. The transition is expected to be seamless, with no impact on customers, timelines, or the existing digital application process. The bylaw itself, originally adopted in 2015, outlines requirements for grading permits, drainage standards, and responsibilities for property development.

  • The Community Issues Committee will meet on Thursday at 1:30 pm. On the agenda is the Wastewater Treatment Plant Asset Management Plan, highlighting significant long-term infrastructure challenges at the City of Lethbridge’s wastewater facility. The report finds that much of the plant, originally expanded in 1987, is at or beyond its service life, with several critical components in poor condition and increasing risks of failure, non-compliance, and service disruption. It also notes the plant is currently operating at or above its engineered capacity of 40 ML/d, limiting the City’s ability to accommodate population and industrial growth. The estimated cost of required upgrades and expansion is substantial, ranging from $250 million to $350 million, with detailed funding and rate impact scenarios to be brought forward in future budget discussions. Committee members are being asked only to receive the plan for information at this stage, with no immediate decisions needed.

  • The Committee will also discuss the City of Lethbridge’s 2026-2029 Council Strategic Plan. It outlines a four-year vision focused on building a resilient, welcoming, and economically diverse city through collaboration, infrastructure investment, and long-term planning. It emphasizes economic prosperity by supporting existing businesses, attracting new investment, and positioning Lethbridge as a regional hub for agriculture, manufacturing, logistics, and emerging industries. The plan also prioritizes healthy and diverse communities by improving housing affordability, maintaining inclusive services, and ensuring safe neighbourhoods. Additional strategic goals focus on cultural vibrancy, environmentally responsible growth, and stronger regional partnerships to improve service delivery and shared outcomes. Environmental priorities include climate resilience, responsible resource use, and stewardship of natural spaces alongside infrastructure planning. Overall, the strategy is intended to guide municipal decision-making and align policies and investments across all departments to support sustainable growth and community wellbeing over the 2026-2029 term.
