Lethbridge Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Lethbridge politics

📅 This Week In Lethbridge: 📅

  • There are no Council or Committee meetings this week. The next City Council meeting will take place on March 24th, followed by a meeting of the Community Issues Committee on March 26th.

  • Lethbridge CFO Darrell Mathews outlined the financial pressures facing the City at the March 11th Council meeting, suggesting that while Budget 2026 holds the line on provincial spending, rising provincial educational property taxes and policy changes are creating new costs for municipalities. Mathews highlighted $2.2 million from Traffic Safety Act enforcement changes, $800,000 for police body-worn cameras, and higher election administration costs. With $244 million in planned transportation and community infrastructure projects and over $736 million needed across 2027-2036, the City faces significant capital pressures. Mathews says that municipalities now receive roughly half the per capita provincial funding compared to 15 years ago, meaning any new costs must be offset through local revenues, service adjustments, or other funding sources.

  • Mayor Blaine Hyggen agreed that City Council faces difficult budget decisions as they prepare operating and capital budgets amid rising provincial educational property taxes and affordability pressures. The City has received over $250 million in project requests but anticipates only about 10% of that funding will be available, forcing Council to prioritize essential needs such as expanding water and wastewater treatment facilities. Hyggen emphasized that while municipalities control the local portion of property taxes, provincial funding shortfalls mean increased costs must be offset by local revenues or adjustments to services. Hyggen remains hopeful that provincial infrastructure funding announcements later this month could help ease the financial burden on Lethbridge residents.

  • Lethbridge celebrated the 7th anniversary of its 311 service, marking over 750,000 calls since the platform's 2019 launch. In 2025, the service handled more than 103,000 phone calls and 31,500 in-person visits, facilitating 128,200 information requests and 21,400 service requests. Residents use 311 for inquiries regarding City programs and maintenance tasks like pothole repairs and graffiti removal. Live agents are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, with an after-hours line dedicated to urgent issues such as power outages or water main breaks. To further enhance operations, the City is implementing "Employee 311," a new internal system providing staff with a centralized method for requesting support and accessing information.

  • The City of Lethbridge has launched a new initiative, "Mapping the Heart of the Lethbridge River Valley," to encourage residents to share personal stories and experiences related to the local trails and nature. The project seeks a variety of submissions, including family traditions, wildlife encounters, and unique nicknames for favourite trails. These stories, along with optional photographs, will be displayed on the Lethbridge River Valley Stories interactive map. By collecting and sharing these authentic experiences, the City aims to inspire exploration and foster a deeper community connection to the area. The initiative is intended to help others discover the river valley while promoting the protection of the natural landscape.
