We usually reserve these weekly updates for sharing news and analysis, but as the year comes to a close, we want to be upfront with you. Our year-end fundraising campaign is underway, with a target of $10,000 to be met by December 31st. This funding is essential to sustaining our operations and allowing us to carry our work into the new year. If you find our work valuable and want to help ensure it continues, we’d be grateful if you would consider making a contribution. Even a modest gift makes a meaningful difference. The city of Lethbridge is ending the year with some positive recognition, having received an Award of Excellence from the Government Finance Officers Association for its financial planning and reserve management. City officials say the award reflects years of careful, forward-looking work to keep services reliable and budgets stable. The award recognizes Lethbridge’s financial reserve policy, which helps cushion unexpected costs, maintain essential services like police, fire, transit, and libraries, and fund major infrastructure projects without placing sudden pressure on taxpayers. The policy was first established by Council in 2020 and has been refined over time to reflect community growth, including new reserves for water and wastewater infrastructure and clearer savings targets. City staff say the approach is about more than sound accounting, and that it provides peace of mind for residents by ensuring the City is prepared for both routine needs and unforeseen challenges.

Scholars at the University of Lethbridge are helping to put southern Alberta at the centre of an important national conversation about artificial intelligence. Faculty from the U of L, alongside colleagues at Trent University, have launched the Canadian Association for the Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence, the first organization of its kind in Canada. The new association aims to bring together philosophers examining how AI is shaping society, from ethical and social impacts to deeper questions about human decision-making, identity, and well-being. Co-founders say that while Canada has invested heavily in AI research and commercialization, there has been no coordinated national forum for philosophical reflection on how these technologies should be developed and used. Since launching earlier this fall, the association has already attracted members from across the country and introduced a national speaker series. Organizers say the goal is to ensure thoughtful, values-based insight rooted in Canadian scholarship, including work happening in Lethbridge, becomes a core part of Canada’s evolving AI landscape.
- Mayor Blaine Hyggen reflected on a challenging but productive 2025, highlighting a nearly 19% drop in the city’s Crime Severity Index - the largest decrease in about 25 years. The year also saw progress in addressing the deficit at the Lethbridge and District Exhibition, with Council splitting the organization into Excite Lethbridge and the reborn Agricultural Society to ensure future stability. Efforts continued to address the doctor shortage, with plans for the first class in the Southern Alberta Medical Program at the University of Lethbridge expected to support local retention. Infrastructure investments, including over $40 million into water and wastewater systems, were prioritized, although a collision that damaged the Whoop-Up Drive bridge caused months of lane closures before repairs were completed in December. Hyggen emphasized the importance of community unity, kindness, and supporting those in need as the city moves into 2026.
