The Governance Standing Policy Committee will meet at 1:30 pm on Thursday. The agenda includes an item entitled "Feasibility of Formalizing the Joint Committee as a Committee of Council", though no further information is available.
-
Also on the agenda is the formalization of the City’s long-standing "Pay As You Go" (PAYG) program through a new policy, which outlines financial standards for funding both tax-supported and utility-supported capital projects without relying on debt. Originally introduced in the early 1990s to reduce borrowing for smaller or recurring infrastructure needs, the PAYG program allocates a portion of the operating budget annually and maintains reserves for debt repayment. The policy now includes a new utility-supported component to fund major rehabilitation projects and future infrastructure needs. City Council had previously approved annual increases to the PAYG fund and directed Administration to integrate utility capital projects into the framework. Adoption of the policy is intended to support long-term financial sustainability, reduce reliance on interest-bearing debt, and increase future budget flexibility. If approved, the policy will be reviewed each Council term and published on the City's website. If not adopted, the current PAYG program would continue under the existing informal structure.
-
Council has unanimously approved a bylaw amendment allowing for the development of a 24-hour child care and respite centre in West Lethbridge. The facility will be the first of its kind in the city, providing overnight care for shift workers and families of children with disabilities. Located just off University Drive, the site will also include a rentable community meeting hall to support financial sustainability and foster local engagement. The centre will accommodate children up to 12 years old, feature advanced security measures, and operate under limited public access during overnight hours to ensure uninterrupted sleep. The operated says that the new facility will help fill 210 of the city’s estimated 600 needed child care spaces. Currently, the only comparable service in the region is in Calgary.

A recent report from the Alberta Real Estate Association shows that Lethbridge now has the second highest average housing prices in Alberta, behind only Calgary. In June 2025, the average home in Lethbridge sold for $439,818 - an increase of 9.3% from the previous year - despite the city’s population being just over 111,000 compared to Edmonton’s 1.19 million. Edmonton came in third, with homes averaging $431,582. Detached homes in Lethbridge are nearing the half-million mark, averaging $496,710, while apartments averaged $211,752. Prices for semi-detached and row homes remained relatively stable, with only slight increases. Despite a slight annual dip in sales volume, Lethbridge remains in a seller’s market. This low supply, combined with rising demand, continues to drive prices upward.
- The Alberta government has announced a $22-million investment over three years to expand and modernize the renal dialysis unit at Chinook Regional Hospital in Lethbridge. The project will add 28 hemodialysis stations, two airborne isolation rooms, four exam rooms, and new spaces for family consultation and support services. It aims to improve access and reduce over-capacity in dialysis treatment for patients with chronic kidney and end-stage renal disease across southern Alberta. Construction is expected to be complete by next summer and will support 124 jobs in construction and the trades. Provincial officials say this investment is part of a broader commitment to strengthening health care in the region, following the completion of an earlier surgical initiative at the same hospital. Ministers Martin Long and Matt Jones both highlighted the importance of expanding care close to home and improving patient experiences for those requiring life-saving treatment.
