Lethbridge Minute: Corridor Survey, Luxie Lifts, and Task Force Changes

Lethbridge Minute - Your weekly one-minute summary of Lethbridge politics

This Week In Lethbridge:

  • The Assets and Infrastructure Standing Policy Committee, originally scheduled for Thursday, is cancelled due to a lack of agenda items.

  • The City is preparing for winter with changes to green cart collection, snow routes, and enhanced road safety measures. Starting today, green cart pickups will shift to a bi-weekly schedule as most waste collected during winter is kitchen-based rather than yard waste. Transportation Operations will implement a priority-based snow clearing approach, focusing first on major routes like Whoop-Up and Scenic Drives.

  • There is still time to complete the Corridor Options Survey for the 10 Avenue South and 9 Avenue South Functional Planning Study before it closes tomorrow. The survey presents illustrations of proposed changes aimed at enhancing transportation options. Participants can share their thoughts on how these ideas align with community values and priorities. You can take the survey online.

Last Week In Lethbridge:

  • Members of the Downtown Lawlessness Reduction Task Force presented recommendations to the Governance Standing Policy Committee, proposing a transition to a Downtown Clean and Safe Strategy. This proposal suggests disbanding the current Task Force in favour of an Administrative Committee to handle downtown safety more efficiently. Task Force Chair Hunter Heggie and Councillor Bellinda Crowson expressed support, emphasizing that an administrative committee would allow faster, more flexible action on key issues. Under the plan, current task force members would be invited to join the new committee. Additionally, a request to fund a two-year Community Safety Coordinator position has been made, with final decisions scheduled for the November 12th and 13th Council sessions.

  • Pronghorn Athletics has reintroduced its safe ride program at the University of Lethbridge under a new name, "Luxie Lifts." After a year-long break due to insurance challenges, the initiative resumes, providing safe rides home during the holiday season while supporting student-athletes. Luxie Lifts will operate on selected nights in November and December, run entirely by volunteers, including Pronghorn athletes, who benefit from donations collected. More information is available online.

  • The Galt Museum & Archives has launched two new exhibits: Game Play and Building a Legacy: The Sportsplex at 50. Game Play is a family-friendly, interactive exhibit celebrating Lethbridge’s sports history, covering everything from 3x3 basketball to roller derby and esports. Building a Legacy marks the 50th anniversary of the VisitLethbridge.com Arena and features photos, memorabilia, and information about notable performances, including those by Elton John and Taylor Swift. Both exhibits will run until early 2025.
